Nigeria international striker Taiwo Awoniyi has reached another milestone away from football after successfully completing a postgraduate programme at the PFA Business School.
The 29-year-old forward graduated with Merit after earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship, adding an academic qualification to a professional career that has taken him across some of Europe’s major football leagues.
Awoniyi shared news of the achievement with his followers on Instagram, describing the graduation as a memorable moment in his development beyond the football pitch.
The striker said his latest accomplishment reflected his belief that a career in football should not prevent players from continuing to learn and broaden their knowledge of the sport.
“Another proud moment for me off the pitch,” Awoniyi wrote while announcing his graduation.
He explained that studying had become an important part of his personal journey, particularly as he continues to develop his understanding of football beyond his responsibilities as a player.
For Awoniyi, the qualification represents an opportunity to gain knowledge that could prove valuable long after his playing career comes to an end.
His approach also highlights the growing importance of education and professional development among modern footballers, many of whom pursue academic qualifications alongside their sporting careers.
“Still playing. Still learning. The journey continues,” the Nigerian forward added in his message.
Building a Career Beyond Playing
Awoniyi’s latest achievement comes after years of progression in professional football, beginning with his development at Imperial Academy in Nigeria.
His performances at the youth level attracted attention from abroad, eventually leading to his move to English giants Liverpool in 2015.
Although his time at Liverpool did not result in a lengthy first-team career, the Nigerian striker gained valuable experience through a series of loan spells and subsequent permanent moves.
He went on to play for several clubs in Europe, developing his reputation as a powerful and hardworking centre-forward.
One of the most notable stages of his career came in Germany with Union Berlin, where he established himself as an important attacking player and gained significant Bundesliga experience.
His performances eventually paved the way for a return to England, with Awoniyi joining Nottingham Forest and featuring in the Premier League.
The move gave him another opportunity to demonstrate his qualities at the highest level of English club football while continuing to develop his international career with Nigeria.
New Chapter at Coventry City
Awoniyi is currently with Premier League side Coventry City, following his move from Nottingham Forest in August 2026.
The switch represents another chapter in a career that has already included experiences in Nigeria, England and Germany.
Alongside his club career, Awoniyi has also become part of the Nigerian national team setup, representing the Super Eagles at senior level.
While his primary focus remains on football, his newly completed qualification signals his interest in developing himself beyond his role as a professional player.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship provides Awoniyi with knowledge in an area closely connected to the game he has spent most of his life playing.
His graduation therefore gives him an additional qualification that could potentially support future interests within football, whether in management, administration, sporting leadership or other areas of the industry.
For now, however, Awoniyi remains focused on his playing career while celebrating an academic achievement that he considers an important part of his continued growth.
His message following the graduation captured that balance: football remains central to his journey, but learning continues alongside it.
