The Ghana Police Service has arrested 64 people, including a man suspected of posing as a police officer, during an operation targeting alleged criminal activity at a lounge in the Achimota Mile 7 area of Accra.
The arrests followed a security operation conducted by the Accra Regional Police Command after intelligence gathered by investigators pointed to suspected criminal activities at the location.
Police said the operation was part of efforts to disrupt activities believed to be linked to the illegal possession and possible trading of firearms.
Suspected fake police officer arrested
Among those taken into custody was a man who allegedly presented himself as a police officer.
According to the police, the suspect was found with items that raised questions about his identity and activities. His presence among the other suspects is now part of the investigation into the activities taking place at the lounge.
The police are expected to establish whether the man has any legitimate connection to the security services and determine the circumstances surrounding his alleged impersonation.
64 people taken into custody
A total of 64 suspects were arrested during the swoop.
The operation reportedly focused on the lounge and individuals present at the premises when officers arrived.
Police have not indicated that every person arrested has been formally charged with an offence. Investigations are continuing, and the suspects are expected to undergo further screening to establish their individual involvement, if any, in the activities under investigation.
The distinction is important because an arrest does not by itself establish criminal responsibility.
Firearms allegations under investigation
The operation is linked to suspected firearms-related activity, according to the police.
Investigators are examining whether firearms or related items found during the operation were being illegally possessed, supplied or traded.
The authorities are also expected to establish the ownership and source of any weapons or other exhibits recovered during the exercise.
The investigation could therefore provide more information about whether the suspected firearms activity was connected to a wider criminal network.
Police intensify operations in Accra
The arrests form part of wider efforts by Ghanaian security agencies to tackle criminal activity in the capital.
Accra remains a major commercial centre, and police operations targeting suspected criminal groups are periodically conducted in different parts of the city.
Authorities have increasingly relied on intelligence-led operations to identify locations and individuals suspected of involvement in unlawful activities.
The latest operation at Achimota Mile 7 is another example of this approach.
Investigation continues
Following the arrests, police investigators are expected to conduct background checks and interrogate the suspects as they work to establish what occurred at the lounge.
The suspected fake officer is also likely to face additional scrutiny as investigators seek to establish how he obtained or used police-related identification or equipment, if such items were recovered.
The authorities have not indicated that all 64 suspects will necessarily face the same charges.
Further decisions are expected after investigators complete their preliminary inquiries and determine what evidence exists against individual suspects.
Police urge public cooperation
The Ghana Police Service has repeatedly encouraged members of the public to provide information about suspected criminal activity through the appropriate channels.
Such information can assist law enforcement agencies in identifying locations where illegal weapons or other criminal activities may be taking place.
The latest arrests also highlight the importance of verifying the identity of individuals who claim to be law enforcement officers, particularly when they request information, money or access to restricted areas.
For now, the 64 suspects remain at the centre of an ongoing police investigation, with authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the suspected firearms-related activities and the alleged impersonation of a police officer.
More details could emerge as the investigation progresses and police establish whether the operation has uncovered a broader firearms network in the Accra area.
