Nigerian-American motorsport prospect Ugo Ugochukwu has secured the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Championship after producing a crucial second-place finish in the final race of the season in Madrid, Spain.
The 19-year-old Campos Racing driver sealed the championship on Sunday at the newly constructed Madring circuit, ending a closely fought campaign on top of the standings. His achievement also saw him become the first American driver to claim the FIA Formula 3 title.
Ugochukwu went into the decisive race facing intense pressure after being locked in a season-long battle with British teenager Freddie Slater. The pair had remained among the leading contenders throughout the campaign, with the championship ultimately going down to the final weekend.
Finland’s Tuukka Taponen took victory in the Madrid Feature Race, but Ugochukwu’s runner-up position was enough to put the championship beyond Slater’s reach. Slater crossed the line in eighth, allowing Ugochukwu to finish the season 14 points ahead at the top of the standings.
Who is Ugo Ugochukwu?
Born in New York, Ugochukwu has Nigerian and American roots and has established himself as one of the promising young talents emerging from the international junior racing scene.
His career has been built through the competitive single-seater ladder, with the long-term ambition of reaching Formula 1. His progress previously earned him a place in the McLaren Driver Development Programme, where he was regarded as one of the young prospects with the potential to rise through the ranks of professional motorsport.
For the 2026 season, Ugochukwu competed in FIA Formula 3 with Campos Racing and quickly demonstrated his ability to fight at the front of the field.
He made an impressive start to the campaign by recording his first Formula 3 victory in the Melbourne Feature Race in March. He later added another win at Silverstone, producing a dominant display in the Sprint Race and taking the chequered flag 17 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger.
Championship battle goes down to the wire
Although Ugochukwu eventually emerged as champion, his path to the title was far from easy.
Slater had managed to gain the upper hand during the middle stages of the season. At the Budapest round in July, the British driver beat Ugochukwu in the Feature Race and moved eight points clear in the championship before the summer break.
The momentum shifted again as the season entered its final phase, setting up a dramatic showdown in Madrid.
Heading into the last round, Slater held a 15-point advantage over Ugochukwu. However, the championship picture changed significantly during qualifying. Ugochukwu produced a strong performance, while Slater endured a difficult session, giving the Campos Racing driver a valuable opportunity to close the gap.
With everything at stake in the final race, Ugochukwu kept his composure and delivered the result he needed. His second-place finish proved decisive, enabling him to overturn the deficit and claim the championship at the final opportunity.
A historic achievement
Ugochukwu’s triumph has added a significant milestone to his young career, as he becomes the first driver representing the United States to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
The title also places him among a group of drivers who have used success in Formula 3 as a stepping stone towards Formula 1. Recent champions such as Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto have gone on to compete at motorsport’s highest level.
Formula 3 remains one of the major development categories for aspiring Formula 1 drivers, with successful competitors typically progressing towards Formula 2 before attempting to secure a place on the F1 grid.
For Ugochukwu, the 2026 campaign represents a major breakthrough. After battling through a fiercely contested season, the 19-year-old has now added a prestigious championship to his record.
