Mohbad Death: Police Begin Fresh Investigation After Family’s Petition

The family of late Nigerian Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has secured approval from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

The development was disclosed by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026.

According to the lawyer, the family submitted its petition to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, while the document was formally received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.

The petition raised concerns about what the family described as inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and requested a broader forensic examination of the events surrounding Mohbad’s death.

Fresh Probe Sent to Lagos Police

Following approval by the police leadership, the petition was forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for further action.

The matter was subsequently assigned to officers attached to the Special Enquiry Bureau, who were tasked with carrying out additional investigations.

The family’s legal representative has already met with members of the new investigative team, while relatives have continued to follow up on the progress of the inquiry.

The family has also indicated its willingness to assist the investigators by supplying documents, information, witnesses and any other material that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

Court Case Separate From Police Probe

The family’s clarification comes shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate case seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026, was filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation and was dismissed on September 25.

The family’s lawyer stressed that the court matter was not filed by the Aloba family and was unrelated to the petition it had already submitted directly to the Inspector-General of Police.

The family therefore urged the public not to interpret the dismissal of that case as an end to the separate police investigation initiated through its own petition.

Family Seeks Comprehensive Investigation

The Aloba family has called on the police to approach the new investigation with independence, professionalism and diligence.

According to the family’s legal representatives, the objective is not to predetermine the outcome or conduct proceedings through public accusations. Instead, they want investigators to examine the relevant people, evidence and circumstances surrounding the singer’s death before reaching conclusions.

The family has maintained that a thorough investigation is necessary to resolve lingering questions and establish the facts of the case.

Mohbad’s Death Continues to Draw Attention

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death generated widespread public reaction and renewed demands for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his final days.

His remains were exhumed nine days after his death for an autopsy, but questions surrounding the case have continued to generate public interest.

Calls for another investigation have persisted despite previous police and legal proceedings. In June 2026, the Federal High Court had been asked to consider a separate application seeking an order compelling the police to revisit the case.

The latest development means the Aloba family’s own petition is now being handled through a new investigative process, with the Special Enquiry Bureau assigned to examine the issues raised.

For the family, the priority remains obtaining a clear account of what happened to Mohbad and ensuring that relevant evidence and witnesses are properly considered.

The police investigation is ongoing, and the approval of the petition does not itself establish any new finding about the cause or circumstances of Mohbad’s death.
