Israel-Bound Flight Lands in Saudi Arabia After Reported Pilot Brawl

A Flydubai passenger aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a serious incident involving the flight crew triggered an emergency response and briefly raised fears of a possible hijacking.

Flight FZ1073 was carrying passengers bound for Israel when an altercation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit. The aircraft eventually landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, northern Saudi Arabia.

The incident occurred roughly two and a half hours after the Boeing 737-8 aircraft departed Dubai. Flight-tracking data showed the plane making a sharp descent before changing direction and heading towards Saudi Arabia.

Emergency Alert Raises Security Fears

The aircraft transmitted an emergency signal during the flight, prompting concern among Israeli authorities that the plane could have been taken over.

Israeli fighter jets were reportedly scrambled as officials assessed the situation. The possibility of a hijacking was particularly concerning because a significant number of the passengers were Israeli nationals travelling from the United Arab Emirates to Israel.

However, subsequent reports indicated that the disturbance involved the pilots themselves.

Flydubai confirmed that an incident had occurred in the flight deck and said crew members travelling on the aircraft were able to secure the plane and divert it to Tabuk.

The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities and cautioned against drawing conclusions about what caused the confrontation while investigations were still underway.

Pilots Reportedly Injured

Reports from Israeli and regional media said the confrontation resulted in injuries to the captain and co-pilot.

Later accounts, including comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alleged that one pilot attacked the other with a knife and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s operation.

Netanyahu said passengers and a crew member intervened after the aircraft began behaving abnormally and helped restrain the alleged attacker. He praised those who intervened, saying their actions prevented a potentially serious disaster.

Saudi authorities subsequently took the injured pilots for medical treatment. The alleged attacker was also detained for questioning, according to Israeli officials.

Passengers Safe After Emergency Landing

Despite the alarming events in the air, the aircraft landed safely in Tabuk, and passengers were reported to be out of immediate danger.

Passenger accounts described a frightening experience, with some saying they noticed unusual aircraft movements and heard shouting coming from the front of the plane.

Flight-tracking information showed the aircraft descending rapidly from its cruising altitude before eventually changing course towards Saudi Arabia. The plane later reached Tabuk without crashing or suffering further reported problems.

Flydubai said it had arranged replacement aircraft to help transport the affected passengers and crew after the emergency landing.

Investigation Underway

The circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation remain under investigation. While some Israeli officials have described the incident as a possible attempted attack, the airline has not publicly established a motive.

Israeli authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and the actions of the crew.

The episode comes at a particularly sensitive time for aviation in the region, where security concerns remain high. The emergency response was therefore swift after the aircraft transmitted distress signals and deviated from its planned route.

For now, authorities are expected to focus on determining exactly what happened inside the cockpit, why the confrontation began and how the aircraft’s crew and passengers managed to bring the situation under control.

The safe landing in Saudi Arabia allowed officials to secure the aircraft and begin investigating the incident without a reported loss of life among the passengers.
