South African police have confirmed the discovery of another woman’s body in the Ekurhuleni area of Gauteng, bringing the number of women found dead in the municipality in recent months to 10.
The latest discovery was made on Saturday, September 26, in Tembisa South, north-east of Johannesburg. Police said officers and crime-scene specialists were immediately deployed to the location as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the latest victim or provided details about how she died.
Body Discovered in Tembisa
The body was reportedly located at a cemetery in the Tembisa area. Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed that investigators were at the scene conducting preliminary inquiries and gathering evidence.
Officials said further information would be released once the initial investigation had progressed.
The discovery has added to mounting anxiety across communities in Ekurhuleni, where a number of women have been found dead over the past two months.
According to reports, the previous victims were mostly young women, with some bodies discovered in locations including open areas and places close to major roads. Investigators are examining the circumstances of each death to determine whether there is a connection between the cases.
Police Examine Possible Links
The growing number of cases has raised questions about whether the deaths could be connected. Police have previously acknowledged similarities in some of the cases and have been investigating whether a common offender could be responsible.
However, authorities have not confirmed that a serial killer is operating in the area.
Two women were recently arrested in connection with one of the killings, although investigators have not established a link between those suspects and the other deaths. A male suspect who was initially detained was subsequently released without being charged, according to police information reported by AP.
The latest discovery is therefore expected to become another important part of the wider investigation.
National Concern Over Violence Against Women
The deaths have intensified public concern over violence against women in South Africa, a country that has struggled with high levels of violent crime and gender-based violence for years.
The issue has generated renewed calls for stronger measures to protect women and improve investigations into crimes against them.
The recent cases have also affected residents’ daily lives. Reports from communities around Ekurhuleni indicate that some women have changed their routines, avoided travelling alone and reconsidered outdoor activities because of fears over their safety.
Investigation Continues
For now, police are treating the latest discovery as an active investigation. Crime-scene experts are expected to examine the location and collect evidence that could help establish the victim’s identity and determine what happened to her.
Investigators will also have to establish whether the latest death has any connection to the other cases under examination in Ekurhuleni.
With the discovery of a 10th woman’s body, pressure is likely to remain on South African authorities to determine whether the deaths are isolated incidents or part of a wider pattern.
Until investigators establish clear links between the cases, claims of a serial killer remain unconfirmed. Authorities are continuing their investigations while appealing for information that could help identify those responsible for any of the killings.
