Nigeria: Kwara Teachers Get Monday Off as Governor Marks World Teachers’ Day

Teachers across Kwara State will not be required to report for work on Monday, October 5, 2026, following a declaration by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to mark this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

The state government approved the work-free day as a gesture of appreciation for teachers and their contribution to education and human capital development across Kwara.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday, October 2, by Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola, the Deputy Chief Press Secretary to the governor.

Governor appreciates Kwara teachers

According to the state government, AbdulRazaq used the occasion to recognise the commitment and resilience of teachers who continue to play an important role in educating young people across the state.

The governor extended his goodwill to teachers in different parts of Kwara and thanked them for their continued service.

The government said the decision reflects the importance attached to the teaching profession and the contribution educators make to the development of the state.

AbdulRazaq also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of teachers and the broader wellbeing of residents.

Why Monday was declared work-free

The work-free day coincides with the annual World Teachers’ Day, which is observed globally every October 5.

The occasion is used to recognise teachers and highlight their role in education and the development of society. The 2026 celebration falls on a Monday, prompting the Kwara State Government to give teachers the day off.

The declaration means teachers employed in the state will be able to observe the international celebration without having to attend their regular duties.

The government expressed hope that the break would provide an opportunity for educators to celebrate their profession and reflect on their contribution to society.

Government promises continued support

The AbdulRazaq administration also assured teachers that their welfare would remain part of its priorities.

The governor encouraged educators to maintain their dedication to teaching and continue contributing to the development of Kwara’s education sector.

The government further acknowledged the challenges teachers face in carrying out their responsibilities, describing their resilience as an important part of the state’s human capital development efforts.

The declaration comes as governments and education stakeholders across Nigeria join the global community in recognising teachers and their contribution to shaping future generations.

For teachers in Kwara, Monday’s declaration provides an official break from work as the state marks the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration.
