The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested three men in connection with the alleged kidnapping of a man near Yendi, following a ransom demand of GH¢100,000.
The suspects were picked up at different locations in Sang, in the Mion District of Ghana’s Northern Region, on September 29, 2026, as investigators intensified efforts to identify those behind the reported abduction.
The arrested men have been identified as 32-year-old Mahumudu Abdulai, 32-year-old Ganiu Sumaila and 28-year-old Abdulai Salam. They are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
Four Armed Men Allegedly Carried Out Attack
According to preliminary information released by the police, the incident occurred on September 25 at Dobini Bunban, a community near Yendi.
Investigators said four armed men allegedly stormed the residence of Ayuba Sumiya Mawudu, also known as Haruna, and his brother.
The attackers reportedly assaulted the two men before taking Mawudu away to an undisclosed location.
Following the abduction, the alleged kidnappers contacted the victim’s family and demanded GH¢100,000 in exchange for his release, according to the police account.
Kidnap Victim Escapes
The case took a different turn when Mawudu managed to escape from the location where he was allegedly being held.
After getting away from his captors, he reportedly received assistance from farmers in the Sambu area, who helped him reach a health facility for medical attention.
Police officers later went to the facility after receiving information about the victim’s whereabouts.
During their interaction with investigators, Mawudu reportedly explained that he had been transported to an undisclosed location and kept under armed guard before finding an opportunity to escape.
Victim Identifies Three Suspects
As part of the investigation, police showed Mawudu photographs of individuals suspected of involvement in the abduction.
The police said the victim subsequently identified all three men who had been arrested.
Investigators are now working to establish the precise roles allegedly played by the suspects and determine whether additional people were involved in the operation.
The police have not indicated that the investigation has been completed, and the suspects remain legally presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Suspects Linked to Other Robbery Cases
Beyond the alleged kidnapping, police said preliminary investigations have produced information linking the three suspects to other robbery incidents reported in the area.
The authorities did not provide extensive details about those separate cases, including when they occurred or the specific items allegedly taken.
Investigators are expected to examine the suspected links as they continue gathering evidence and questioning the men in custody.
Police Hunt for Other Accomplices
Although three suspects have been arrested, police believe other individuals may have been involved in the alleged kidnapping.
The Northern Regional Police Command said efforts are continuing to locate and arrest the remaining accomplices.
Authorities are also working to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the abduction, including how the victim was transported from his residence and where he was allegedly held.
The investigation could therefore lead to additional arrests as police pursue further information.
Yendi Area Faces Continued Security Concerns
The latest incident has again drawn attention to kidnapping and robbery concerns in parts of northern Ghana.
The Yendi-Mion area and surrounding communities have previously featured in reports involving alleged kidnapping-for-ransom cases, making security and community vigilance important issues for residents.
However, each criminal case must be assessed on its own evidence, and the arrest of suspects does not by itself establish their guilt.
For now, the three men remain in police custody while investigators pursue additional leads and search for other alleged accomplices.
The Northern Regional Police Command is expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses and more facts surrounding the incident become established.
