The Cobra Kai story may have reached its official conclusion, but interest in the Netflix hit and the wider Karate Kid universe remains strong as fans continue to ask what could come next.
The series, which brought Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence back into the spotlight, ended with its sixth season. Netflix describes Season 6 as the show’s final season, bringing the long-running rivalry between the two characters to a conclusion after more than four decades.
Cobra Kai Season 7: Is It Happening?
One of the biggest questions among fans is whether Netflix could eventually order Cobra Kai Season 7.
At present, there is no official Season 7 announcement. The sixth season was deliberately created as the conclusion of the main Cobra Kai story, with creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg bringing Daniel, Johnny and the younger generation’s journey to an end. Netflix’s official material continues to identify Season 6 as the final season.
That does not necessarily mean audiences have seen the last of the franchise.
Following the finale, the show’s creators indicated that they still had ideas for other stories within the Karate Kid universe. In an interview with the Television Academy, Josh Heald said the sixth season represented the end of the “mothership,” while explaining that the creative team had ideas about taking the story in another direction. He also noted that any future project would depend on discussions with Sony and Netflix.
Could There Be a Cobra Kai Spin-Off?
The possibility of a spin-off remains one of the most interesting developments surrounding the franchise.
Because Cobra Kai introduced numerous characters beyond Daniel and Johnny, the series created several potential storylines that could be explored in a future project. The younger fighters, former rivals and established Karate Kid characters all have histories that could potentially support another series.
However, fans should distinguish between creative ideas and officially commissioned productions. While the creators have discussed possible directions for the franchise, Netflix has not announced a new Cobra Kai spin-off as a confirmed replacement for Season 7.
Among the ideas discussed around the franchise over the years has been a story involving Mr. Miyagi’s past. Reports have also highlighted the possibility of exploring other characters from the Karate Kid universe. These remain possibilities rather than confirmed Netflix productions.
What Happened in Cobra Kai Season 6?
Season 6 served as the final chapter of the Netflix series and expanded the story beyond the familiar setting of the Valley.
Miyagi-Do and its fighters entered the international Sekai Taikai tournament, putting the characters against new opponents while also forcing them to confront unresolved conflicts from their past.
The tournament storyline became particularly dramatic in the second part of the season. Netflix’s official Season 6 coverage notes that events surrounding the tournament eventually led to an all-out confrontation and a student’s death, leaving the characters to deal with the consequences in the final episodes.
The final five episodes were released on Netflix on February 13, 2025, completing the sixth and final season.
Daniel and Johnny’s Story Comes Full Circle
At the centre of Cobra Kai has always been the complicated relationship between Daniel and Johnny.
The two characters began as teenage rivals in the original 1984 The Karate Kid, but the Netflix series re-examined their history from a different perspective. Johnny’s attempt to revive Cobra Kai eventually brought him into conflict with Daniel, before circumstances forced the two former enemies to work together.
By the end of the series, their relationship had developed far beyond the rivalry seen in the original film.
Netflix’s post-finale coverage describes their journey as one that ultimately transformed them from enemies into allies and friends.
That character development is also one reason a direct seventh season could be difficult to justify. The creators designed the sixth season to provide a conclusion to the central story rather than simply leave the characters waiting for another chapter.
The Karate Kid Universe Is Still Alive
Although Cobra Kai has ended, the larger Karate Kid franchise continues to attract attention.
The success of the Netflix series demonstrated that characters created decades ago could still connect with both longtime fans and a younger audience. Netflix itself has described the show’s legacy as spanning multiple generations, with themes such as mentorship, redemption, fatherhood and second chances forming an important part of its appeal.
The creators have also made it clear that they are not necessarily finished with the universe. Their comments suggest that future projects could explore different characters or periods while maintaining connections to the Karate Kid mythology.
There is also a fan-made documentary project, Kai Hards, that was reported as being planned for 2026, with involvement from members of the Cobra Kai creative and cast community. It is separate from a new Netflix season or official scripted spin-off.
What Fans Can Expect Now
For now, Cobra Kai fans have all six seasons available to stream on Netflix, with the platform continuing to feature the series and its characters prominently in its Karate Kid content.
The key update is that there is no confirmed Season 7 at this time. Instead, attention remains on whether Netflix and Sony will eventually approve one of the possible stories connected to the wider Karate Kid universe.
The end of Cobra Kai therefore appears to be more of a conclusion to one chapter than necessarily the end of the entire mythology. The original series has completed its run, while the creators have left open the possibility of returning to the world they helped expand.
