Former Ghana international Michael Essien has reportedly emerged as one of the names being considered for the vacant Black Stars coaching position following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.
Local reports have linked the former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder with a possible interim role as the Ghana Football Association searches for a new permanent head coach.
Essien’s name is being discussed at a crucial time for Ghana, with the Black Stars needing to recover from a poor beginning to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Queiroz Departure Leaves Ghana Searching
Ghana and Queiroz recently agreed to end their working relationship following a disappointing start to the AFCON qualifiers.
The Black Stars lost their opening two matches, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Côte d’Ivoire before falling 4-2 at home to The Gambia.
The results left Ghana without a point from its first two qualifying matches and prompted the GFA to begin looking for a new direction.
The GFA has since confirmed that a five-member technical search committee has been established to identify and recommend a suitable replacement for Queiroz.
The committee includes former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, alongside Fred Pappoe, Anthony Baffoe, Agbesi Dzakpasu and Faisal Chibsah.
Essien Considered for Short-Term Assignment
According to reports cited by YEN.com.gh, Essien could be considered for an interim appointment ahead of Ghana’s next AFCON qualifying fixtures in November.
Such an arrangement would allow the GFA to avoid rushing into a permanent appointment while its search committee assesses possible candidates.
Essien’s familiarity with Ghanaian football and his growing coaching experience in Europe could make him an attractive option for a temporary assignment.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the GFA that Essien has been selected or appointed.
From Black Stars Star to Coach
Essien would bring an impressive playing background to the role if he eventually gets the opportunity.
The former midfielder enjoyed a distinguished career in European football, most notably with Chelsea, where he became an important member of the club’s midfield during a successful period.
He also represented Real Madrid and AC Milan, among other clubs, while earning extensive international experience with Ghana.
After ending his playing career, Essien began working towards establishing himself on the coaching side of the game.
Since 2020, he has been part of the coaching setup at Danish club FC Nordsjælland, working as an assistant while continuing his development and pursuing coaching qualifications.
Essien Previously Admitted He Needed More Experience
Interestingly, the possibility of Essien coaching the Black Stars represents a significant change from his own position a few years ago.
In 2024, the former Ghana midfielder acknowledged that he did not yet consider himself ready to take charge of the national team.
He indicated at the time that he wanted to gain more experience before accepting such a demanding position.
His continued work with Nordsjælland has since given him additional exposure to coaching, player development and the day-to-day demands of working within a professional football structure.
That experience could now strengthen his credentials if the GFA decides to consider him seriously.
Ghana Need Stability Before November Fixtures
The timing of the coaching decision is particularly important because Ghana’s next AFCON qualifying matches are scheduled for November.
The Black Stars cannot afford another poor run if they want to improve their position in the qualifying group.
An interim coach could therefore be tasked with stabilising the team, restoring confidence and collecting crucial points while the GFA continues its search for a permanent manager.
For Essien, an appointment would represent the biggest coaching opportunity of his career and a chance to return to the Black Stars in an entirely different capacity.
No Decision Has Been Announced
Despite the growing speculation, Ghana’s football authorities have yet to confirm Essien as a candidate or announce any interim coach.
The chairman of the technical search committee, Fred Pappoe, has also urged restraint, saying the committee had not yet finalised its criteria or made decisions on potential candidates.
For now, Essien remains one of the reported names in the conversation.
Whether his coaching experience in Denmark is enough to convince the GFA to hand him the Black Stars job, even temporarily, will become clearer as the search for Queiroz’s successor progresses.
