OPay IPO: Nigerian Fintech Records $90.9 Million Net Income in First Half of 2026

Nigeria-focused financial technology company OPay has reported a sharp increase in revenue and profits in the first half of 2026, strengthening its financial position as it prepares to enter the United States stock market.

The company disclosed the figures in documents submitted as part of its proposed initial public offering (IPO) in the US. According to the filing, OPay generated $467.1 million in revenue for the six months ended June 30, 2026, more than twice the $197.5 million recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

Its net income also climbed considerably, rising to $90.9 million from $21.7 million a year earlier. The figures highlight the growth of OPay’s digital financial services business, particularly in Nigeria, where mobile payments and app-based financial transactions have become increasingly important to consumers and businesses.

The planned US listing could provide OPay with access to international investors as it seeks to build on its expansion across emerging markets. However, its IPO comes at a time when rising bond yields and elevated interest rates are making investors more cautious about new stock market offerings.

OPay’s Financial Performance Shows Strong Growth

OPay’s latest financial disclosures point to a significant improvement in its business performance over the first half of 2026.

Revenue increased from $197.5 million in the first six months of 2025 to $467.1 million in the same period this year. The company also recorded a substantial rise in net income, suggesting that its earnings have grown alongside demand for its financial services.

The results are important as OPay prepares to approach public-market investors, who typically assess a company’s revenue growth, profitability, market position and ability to sustain its performance before deciding whether to invest.

For a fintech company operating in emerging markets, expanding its customer base while maintaining profitable operations can be particularly important. OPay’s latest figures offer investors an indication of how its business has developed as digital financial services become more widely used.

Nevertheless, strong recent results do not guarantee future performance. Investors will also consider the company’s operating costs, competition, regulatory obligations and ability to maintain growth after its listing.

OPay Targets New Investors Through US IPO

The financial results form part of OPay’s broader effort to attract investors through a listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The company has applied to list its American depositary shares under the ticker symbol OPAY, according to the filing.

The proposed listing could give the company greater access to international capital markets and increase its visibility among global investors. However, the final terms of the offering, including the price of its shares, had not been disclosed in the reports available on October 9, 2026.

OPay is also expected to pursue a secondary listing in Nigeria after completing its planned US market debut. If completed, the move could create an additional connection between the company and Nigeria’s domestic investment market.

The company has secured backing from major financial institutions ahead of the offering. Stanbic Africa Holdings has agreed to invest up to $200 million through a separate private placement linked to the IPO. Meanwhile, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Standard Bank and China International Capital Corporation are among the institutions involved in managing the proposed offering.

SoftBank and Other Investors Have Stakes in OPay

OPay has attracted support from international investors, including Japan-based technology investment group SoftBank. Entities linked to SoftBank held a 6.6 per cent stake in the fintech company before the proposed share sale, according to its filing.

The business was founded by Chinese entrepreneur Yahui Zhou, who also established Beijing Kunlun Tech, a gaming and technology company that previously owned dating platform Grindr.

OPay raised $400 million in a 2021 funding round that valued the company at $2 billion. Its planned stock market debut represents another significant stage in its development as it seeks to attract additional capital and expand its financial services business.

Digital Payments Remain Central to OPay’s Business

OPay offers a range of digital financial services, including electronic payments, money transfers and lending. Its platform serves both individual consumers and merchants, allowing users to carry out financial transactions through mobile devices.

Beyond Nigeria, the company operates in Indonesia, Egypt and Pakistan, although its services differ across those markets. Its operations in these countries give it exposure to several emerging economies where demand for digital financial products is growing.

A separate report on OPay’s registration statement said the platform had 50.1 million monthly active users. The company recorded $806 million in revenue over the 12 months ending June 30, 2026, highlighting the scale of its business as it prepares for a potential public listing.

The growth of mobile banking and digital payment services has created opportunities for fintech companies across Africa. Many consumers and small businesses increasingly rely on digital platforms to transfer funds, receive payments and access services that may be less convenient through traditional banking channels.

For OPay, sustaining that growth will depend on its ability to retain customers, expand its services and compete with other financial technology companies and established banks.

Market Conditions Could Influence the IPO

Despite OPay’s improved financial performance, the timing of its proposed listing presents potential challenges.

Higher interest rates and rising bond yields have made investors more cautious about new stock offerings. Several companies have postponed or reconsidered their IPO plans amid uncertainty over market conditions and the valuations investors are willing to accept.

These conditions could influence the level of demand for OPay’s shares and the terms under which it ultimately enters the market.

Investors will likely examine the company’s earnings growth alongside its expansion plans, competitive position and exposure to regulatory requirements in the countries where it operates. They will also want to understand whether its recent performance can be maintained as the business grows.

OPay’s revenue and net income figures provide evidence of substantial financial progress. However, the success of its planned US listing will depend on investor appetite, the final offering terms and confidence in the company’s long-term prospects.

For Nigeria’s fintech industry, the proposed IPO could also draw greater international attention to the opportunities available in digital financial services across Africa.
